Gokyo Lake Trek Overview

The Gokyo Lake Trek is a substitute for the cultural Everest Base Camp trek at the time, still offering the trekker enough of the amazing landscape of Everest and overnight stays in the classical town of Namche Bazaar, the doorway to the Khumbu Region. The trail of the Gokyo Lakes is less busy but still manages the trekkers and perception of local village life, the magnificent landscape of icy rivers and stony, glacier debris, snow-capped mountains, and surely, the gleaming turquoise waters of Gokyo Lakes themselves.

The Gokyo Lakes are authentically made up of six bodies of water, or lakes, situated at the height of 4700 to 5000m in the Gokyo Valley. Gokyo Valley falls inside the Sagarmatha National Park region. The lakes are the world’s highest freshwater lake system and have been assigned as a Ramsar place (marshland of international significance) and holy for both Hindus and Buddhists. And if the trekkers any more witness to the attractiveness and significance of this region, Lonely Planet states, “For our money, the Gokyo Valley is the most spectacular in the Khumbu.”Though spending an additional day in the Gokyo Valley, the trekkers can explore the fifth and sixth lakes in a high alpine bowl at the foot of Cho Oyu, the world’s sixth tallest peak. The trekker should anticipate walking across 5 hours a day, with one of the highlights being a steep climb up to Gokyo RI (5,357M) to witness Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu. On the other hand, the biggest glaciers in Nepal, are Ngozumpa, and ice ridges.

If walking 5 hours per day is not an alternative for trekkers and still want to view the pristine attractiveness of Gokyo Lake, consider a helicopter tour. For adjusting prior to setting off for the Gokyo Ri and Gokyo Valley, time spent in Namche Bazaar provides the trekkers the chance to trek to close Khumjung Village to explore the school set up by Sir Edmund Hillary, who, together with Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, was the first person to effectively summit Mt. Everest.Since that time, loads of climbing adventures and thousands of trekkers have made Namche Bazaar a lively, bustling market town where it is likely to swap trekking stories with members of other teams.
