Makalu Base Camp Trek Overview

The Makalu base camp trek one of the remote area trekking trail in Nepal. the trek offerings amazing landscape, beautiful Himalayan vistas far from crowded trail. located on eastern Himalaya region of Nepal, this trek leads to the base camp of Mt. Makalu (8463m), the fifth highest mountain in the world. Makalu Base camp trek rewards trekkers rich bio-diversity, dramatic landscapes and rich culture encounters. one of the highlights of the Makalu base camp trek is trekking through Makalu Barun National Park, one of the Nepal’s most biologically diverse protected area.

The trek usually begin with fly to tumlingtar from Kathmandu, several days walking through the rice fields, dense forests and ancient villages. first section of the trail is pass through Warm, subtropical regions where rice terraces, cardamom farms and bamboo groves dominate the scenery. As a gain altitudes landscape gradually transform into rhododendron forest, alpine meadows and rugged high-altitude terrain. After crossing physical challenging Shipton La Pass, Landscape turn into the Himalayan Paradise, surrounding by major peaks of the trek including Mt. Makalu, Mt. Chamlang, Mt. Baruntse and other towering peaks. When reach the Makalu Base camp (4870m), trekkers are rewarded the south face of awe inspiring view of Mt. Makalu, Barun Pokhari, Icy glaciers and surrounding Himalayan towers.

Physically, this is one of the challenging trekking trail in Nepal, where includes lots of Up and downs, high passes and long walking days. culturally, the trek passes through inhabited by Rai, Tamang and Sherpa, where trekkers enjoy local lifestyle, typical foods and warm hospitality. because the region is not commercial like The Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Region. as a remote area trekking trail, accommodation is mostly local tea houses and home stay, adding to the sense of  wilderness and exploration. Upon Arrival in Kathmandu, Nepal, our office representative will pick you up from the airport and transfer to the hotel. along the way you will see daily life of the Kathmandu Valley. today you will be rest and small walk around Thamel, a tourist hub in Kathmandu.

Today we will drive into the rich culture of Kathmandu with a guided sightseeing tour of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. our first stop is Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the “Monkey Temple”, where we will explore the ancient complex and enjoy panoramic views of the entire Kathmandu valley. Next, we will visit Boudhanath Stupa, a truly sacred and awe-inspiring site for Tibetan Buddhists and one of the largest stupas in the world. we will also visit Pashupatinath Temple, a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located along the holy Bagmati river. Our tour continues to Patan Durbar Square, a showcase of stunning traditional Newari architecture and art. after an incredible day of exploration, we will head back to the hotel to prepare for the start of our trek tomorrow.

After breakfast, we will take one hour scenic flight to Tumlintar, then of to Jeep for off-road drive to Num village. the beautiful settlement make amazing night for our stay.

After breakfast, we begin our descent toward the Barun river, winding through lush rice paddies and vibrant green forests. once we cross the river, the trail immediately turns upward for a steady climb to Seduwa. This Charming villages serves as the official entrance to Makalu Barun National Park, where we will spend the night.

leaving seduwa behind, we trek across rolling hills and pass through small bamboo groves. the trail takes us through remote farming settlements before a final climb brings us to tashi gau, the last permanent village on the trek. we will enjoy the local hospitality here tonight before heading into the higher wilderness.

Today is a challenging but rewarding day as we leave the village behind. the trail climbs steeply through ancient rhododendron and oak forests, eventually reaching a high ridge. as we gain altitude, the air becomes crisper and the forest thins out. we reach khongma danda, a spectacular ridge top campsite that offers our first grand views of the high Himalayan peaks.

This is a highlight of the trek. we cross several high altitude passes, including the shipton La. the trails offers breathtaking views of Makalu and Kanchenjunga on clear day. after passing the sacred lake of kalo pokhari, we descend through rocky terrain to reach the forested shelter of Dobate for the night.

today we descend back towards the barun river, entering the deep and spectacular Barun Valley. the trail leads us through magical forests that feel untouched by time. as the valley opens up, we walk alongside the rushing river, surrounded by towering granite cliffs and beautiful waterfalls. we end the day at Yangle kharka, where the view of the surrounding peaks begin to feel truly close.

Today is an extraordinary day dedicated to exploring Chheji Dukang (Shiva dhara), a sacred site tucked away in the steep cliffs of the Barun Valley. we leave our heavy packs at yangle kharka and begin a challenging , steep ascent. the trail involves navigating narrow paths and in stone sectiond, using fixed ropes and ladders to climb the rocky mountainside. upon reaching Chheji Dukang, we are met with a magnificent waterfall cascading from a high stone hole in the cliffside, considered a holy shower of Guru Rimpochhe. the surrounding scenery is mystical , with Selki Dukang (Parvati Cave) nearby and incredible views of the valley below. after soaking in the spiritual energy and the raw beauty of the site, we carefully descend back to Yangle kharka for a well-earned rest and another night in the valley.

As we continue our trek deeper into the Himalayas. the landscape transforms into a high alpine wilderness. we cross wooden bridges, Buddhist shrines along the way. upon reaching Langmale, the scale of the mountains here is absolutely breathtaking.

The final push to Makalu Base Camp is a moment to remember. the trail climbs gradually through a rocky landscape, following the lateral moraine of the Barun glacier. reaching the base camp Of Makalu feels like standing at the edge of the world. we settle in for a night under a sky full of stars in one of the most remote places on Earth.

Today is dedicated to rest and exploration around. a short hike further up the moraine offers an even more spectacular vantage point of the towering Mt. Makalu, Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse and many more. this is the day reflect on the incredible journey before we begin our descent.

with the peaks of the high Himalayas behind us, we begin our descent back down to Barun valley. while we retrace our steps, the views are entirely different as we face down-valley toward the lush greenery in the distance. the walk is mostly downhill, allowing us to move quickly and enjoy the oxygen- rich air as we return to the grassy pastures of Yangle kharka for the night.

leaving the open Barun valley, we re-enter the forest zone. the trail winds through rhododendron and pine forests, crossing several up and down. the ascent back towards Dobate can be a bit tiring, but the shelter of the forest provides a peaceful and cozy atmosphere for our evening rest.

today we tackle the high ridges again, crossing the kekila and Shipton La passes. while the climb is challenging, the familiar views of the Himalayan range serve as a grand farewell to the high peaks. we eventually reach the Khongma danda, where we can be witness of the sunset over the deep valleys we have traversed. this is our final night at high altitude.

The trail drops steeply today as we leave the alpine zone and descend back into warmth of the lower elevations. we finish the trek back to seduwa, where we began our park entry. its wonderful chance to celebrate your last day with local community.

Here, we meet our transport for the scenic drive back to khadbari. this evening, we gather for a final farewell dinner with our trekking crews to celebrate the successful completion of the Makalu Base Camp trek.

  • Makalu Base Camp trek is one of the remote and off-the-beaten path trekking trail in Nepal, Trekkers deep in to the cultural and natural wilderness adventure in this trip.

  • This is a bit longer days trek than classical Everest base camp Trek or Annapurna Base Camp trek, 18- 21 days is better for this trek, including acclimatization days.

  • The best times for the Makalu Base Camp Trek are during the pre-monsoon (spring) season (March to May) and the post-monsoon (autumn) season (September to November). These months generally have clear skies and stable weather, making for better trekking conditions.

  • While prior trekking experience can be helpful, the Makalu Base Camp Trek is considered a moderate trek that can be completed by people with a reasonable level of fitness. However, it’s important to be prepared for long days of walking and changes in altitude.

  • While it’s not mandatory to have a guide and porter, many trekkers choose to hire them for convenience and to support the local economy. A guide can provide information about the region and assist with navigation, while a porter can carry your heavy backpack, allowing you to focus on the trek itself.

  • Altitude sickness is a concern on this trek due to the high elevation. Gradual acclimatization is key. It’s recommended to take rest days for acclimatization at certain points along the trek. Drinking plenty of water, eating well, and ascending slowly can also help prevent altitude-related issues.

  • Pack layers of clothing for varying weather conditions, including warm clothing for higher altitudes. Good hiking boots, a comfortable day pack, a sleeping bag, a first aid kit, and personal toiletries are also essential.

  • Physical fitness is important for the trek. Cardiovascular training, strength training, and practicing hiking with a loaded backpack are recommended to prepare for the trek’s demands.
